Compass One's Go Sustainable Initiative

On 15 April, Compass One launched its green initiative as Singapore’s first mall to pledge support for The Food Bank’s "Food Wastage Reduction & Fight Hunger" movement.

A strong supporter of the waste reduction cause, this initiative is in line with NEA’s efforts to reduce food waste. Compass One is also the first mall to donate cooked food to Food Bank, which is now included in its food rescue plans. It has actively encouraged mall tenants to participate in this food wastage reduction drive by donating their excess cooked food to The Food Bank.

The pioneer batch of participating mall tenants, such as Kopitiam, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, The Soup Restaurant, Ichiban Sushi and Hong Kong Sheng Kee Pau, has shown enthusiastic support for this food rescue programme. The donated food is stored, managed and distributed to over 300 charity organizations and beneficiaries in Singapore.

In conjunction with the food rescue programme for its green initiative, and with its aim to be a one-stop collection hub for recyclables and excess food within the neighbourhood for Sengkang residents and shoppers, Compass One is also launching a series of fringe activities to encourage the community to actively contribute to waste reduction.

Try your hand at making a bag out of your old clothes : 1) Cut both sides of an old T-shirt to open up the seams. 2) Next, cut the bottom third of the shirt into inch-wide strips. 3) Tie each pair of strips together. 4) Cross tip adjoining strips. 5) You now have a bag made from your old T-shirt.

For more information on the initiative, visit the Compass One website here.

Toast Box Sprouting Kits - A Little Coffee Goes A Long Way

To mark its sixth year milestone, Toast Box joins forces with non-profit charity organization, ABLE (Abilities Beyond Limitations and Expectations), to join hands with their beneficiaries to raise awareness and funds for ABLE’s rehabilitation, respite and training programs.

This year, the funds will be raised through the sales of Sprouting Kits - a portable-sized cup that comes with soil compost processed from Toast Box’s recycled coffee grounds, together with seeds for growing the sprouts. As part of its initiative to give back to the community, Toast Box has been supporting ABLE through fund-raising programs in the last six years.

Together with ABLE’s staff and beneficiaries, Toast Box’s staff volunteers pack and assemble each individual Sprouting Kit by hand - from sticking of labels onto the cups, to packing the soil compost, seeds and instructional guides.

These packing sessions keep the beneficiaries physically and socially active as they interact with Toast Box staff volunteers, working hand-in-hand to accomplish these tasks. It also allows Toast Box staff-volunteers to better understand the challenges faced by the beneficiaries and how the funds raised can serve ABLE’s programs which are aimed to help the physically-challenged live with dignity and lead a productive, meaningful and independent life.

To take this social community effort further, this year’s fund raising also stems from Toast Box’s creative way of giving back to the environment by recycling their coffee grounds and reusing them as soil compost.

"This year, our beneficiaries are especially delighted to play a part in this fund-raising initiative and through Toast Box, we hope to reach out to more members of the public to increase awareness of our services and to help more beneficiaries."
-- Gene Lee, Executive Director of ABLE --

From 22 September 2016, portable-sized Toast Box Sprouting Kits were available across 35 Toast Box stores*, sold at $5 each. 100% of all proceeds from sale of these kits will go directly to ABLE to support their rehabilitation, respite and training programs.

*Sprouting Kits are sold at Toast Box outlets at 100AM, Bedok Mall, BreadTalk IHQ, Bugis Junction, Causeway Point L1, City Square Mall, Clementi Mall, Compass One, Eastpoint Mall, Esplanade, Greenwich V, JEM, Kitchener Complex, Marina Bay Sands, myVillage, NAFA, nex @ Serangoon, Paragon, Parkway Parade B1, Pasir Ris Sports Centre, Plaza Singapura, Rail Mall, Resorts World Sentosa, SAFRA Toa Payoh, Shaw House, Singapore Cruise Centre, Sun Plaza, Suntec City Mall, United Square, VivoCity B2, Waterway Point, West Coast Plaza, Westgate, Yew Tee Point, Zhongshan Mall.

My Kiwis Are Planted By Handsome Italian Men!

Singapore
June 2013

This morning, Merlion Wayfarer drank a freshly-blended kiwi smoothie.

(Source : My Danish Kitchen)

Now, Italy is the world’s largest kiwi producer. The trans-alpine country has an extension of 25,000 hectares of kiwi, basically spread over the most typical areas: The Veneto (around Verona), Emilia-Romagna (around Cesena) and Latina (Southern Rome).

(Source : Lonely Planet)

This could mean that what she drank could be planted by someone as good-looking as these!

The handsome Italian-American crooner, the handsome Italian-American lover, the handsome Italian-American dancer....

Curious about the origins of her food, she took a walk in the supermarket. Here's what she found...

Carrots and apples from the lands of Crocodile Dundee and Lord of the Rings.
And yes, I "envy" the fresh air and green fields these fruits enjoyed there...

Nearer to Singapore, yet still a plane ride away - Dragonfruit from Vietnam and mangoes from India...

These probably suffered from bum ache from at least 24 hours of plane journey -
Pears and lemons from South Africa, black grapes from Chile, blueberries from Morocco...

From exotic lands filled with mystique that you often see in travel brochures -
Apricots from Turkey and green grapes from Egypt...

Not to mention the famous Valencia oranges from the US...

Ok ok, we all know that growing organic food causes fewer greenhouse gases than traditional farming. But what happens when your organic kiwis shipped from Italy to Singapore?

Most produce is picked 4 to 7 days before being placed on supermarket shelves, and is shipped for an average of 1,500 miles before being sold. As your breakfast racks up "food miles", it is also accumulating a larger ecological footprint due to the energy required to store and transport around the globe.

As a result of its time in transit, your kiwis probably require a lot more packing to keep it in good shape. And it is plucked when still in the raw stage. That explains why so many kiwis taste sour if you try to eat them straight after you bought them from the supermarket.

Where available, consider choosing produce grown nearer to Singapore, e.g. Pasar range. They are grown locally or in regional countries like Malaysia and Thailand.

It is World Environment Day 2013 today, so THINK before you EAT and SAVE the environment.
