Celebrating Nila Utama's First Birthday

Nila Utama, the first elephant to be born at the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari in nine years,  celebrates his first birthday at an exclusive tea party today.


The little elephant, lovingly referred to as "Nila" by his keepers and who is named after the Palembang prince who founded the kingdom of Singapura, received a giant birthday cake made from carrots, wheat and ice, among other ingredients, while his guests enjoyed delicious elephant-shaped mini cakes and other tea-time treats during the celebration.

Invited guests  (Merlion Wayfarer included!) went on a gourmet safari tram ride at the Night Safari, which stops at the Asian elephants exhibit where the party was be held. It was fascinating seeing all the Night Safari animals clearly in bright daylight.


Mr. Kumar Pillai, general manager of the Night Safari, said the birth of Nila Utama was a significant milestone as it underscored the importance of education and conservation of Asian elephants in the wild.
"This mini event is not only a birthday celebration for Nila - 
it also highlights the success of captive breeding programmes like ours and 
the plight of these beautiful animals in the wild."

Dinosaurs Live! - A Night With T-Rex

Merlion Wayfarer won an overnight stay at DINOSAURS Live! to promote StarHub's launch of Steven Spielberg's Terra Nova TV series. It was held at the Singapore Science Centre. (Thank you, StarHub & Science Centre!)

Anxious to be spending a night among towering exhibits and with visions of dinosaurs come alive, she steps into the exhibition hall...
And is greeted by a T-Rex!

As she ventures further into the wilderness...

Beware... These dinosaurs move and roar!

Alligators have teeth and they bite!

Now... What if several of them gang up to attack you?

The special effects lighting creates the mood... 
Is one going to jump out of the shadows in that corner over there?

How's this for size? - You can walk beneath a dinosaur!

Do dinosaurs stand up on their hind legs or are they on all fours?

After the nail-biting tour of the giants, Merlion Wayfarer was led into the lobby, away from all the man-eaters. She breathes a sigh of relief...

Rides for kids that look real!

Games include digging for "bones" and puzzles...

A ration pack as all sit down to enjoy the pilot episode on the mega big screen...

As the show draws to a close, sleepyheads wander back among the trees to search for a resting place for the night...
